So for instance if you want to do more subtle stuff with peak modelling only, using moderate to fast attack and release times, you can arrive at the sound you want and apply the enhancer just enough to increase the volume and allow you to increase the output level somewhat - thereby giving you higher modulation and filling out the sound a bit more etc. The fader on the enhance is there so that you can reduce the effect if sample value limiting isn't the most important thing. This is the crucial clever bit - as it allows for a kinder sounding limiting action (using slower gentler attacks) which produces less overall artefacts - meaning you can apply harder limiting.įull sample value limiting (PT red light extinguishing) will fully happen only if the enhancer is set at 100% or above - with a very slight reduction in the output gain (-0.005dB or so - note the law of the output fader is very shallow at the top to give you very fine control so that you can just get the red light on if necessary).Įnhancer settings below 100% will progressively allow more overshoot to find it's way to the output - but because of the internal Plug-in head room you can legally reduce the output fader to compensate - the signal isn't being clipped internally, it's at -18dBr.

The idea is that since the limiter has internal headroom (the input signal is reduced by 18dB - processed at -18dBr and then bumped up again), any overshoots caused by slower attacks can be passed unclipped to the enhancer - where they are processed again and included in the sound of the programme - without causing overloads. To briefly explain why this is - an attack control would normally be an illegal function in a brick wall limiter since slowing attacks down would cause level overshoots. For normal limiting action (using PT sample value meters) the pre-processing and the enhance sections should be used in combination - as illustrated by the included set-ups. The emphasis in the manual had subtly shifted in the writing and nowhere did it actually state that complete sample value limiting will only occur with the enhance set at 100% and above.

I don't normally post here, but I really should step in and say that it was not so much operator error as a misleading manual (it was not the operators fault - but mine). Sony says it's caused by operator errors.
